Preparing for Your Flight Physical

If you are currently a professional pilot or you are in training to become one, you are already aware of the Federal Aviation Administration regulations regarding your physical exam. Your medical requirements will vary depending on your certification level. Knowing what to expect from your flight physical will help you to prepare. Dr. Joseph Ravid at Gulfview Medical Institute in Port Charlotte, FL can provide you with a flight physical.

What to Expect from Your Flight Physical

Dr. Ravid will perform the following assessments:

  • General physical: Your doctor will check that all of your limbs are functioning properly and that you have no physical disabilities or problems with movement.
  • Weight and height: As well as recording your weight and height, the doctor will also calculate your body mass index.
  • Blood pressure: To pass your flight physical, your blood pressure must not be over 155/95. You must also not have any irregularities in your heart rate, such as tachycardia or arrhythmia. If your doctor does notice an irregularity, you may be required to take further tests.
  • Hearing and sight: Your hearing test evaluates your ability to hear a conversation at a distance of six feet. The vision test is designed to assess your long and short-distance vision, your color differentiation, and your depth of field.
  • Mental health: Your doctor will take your full medical history, this should include any history of neurological, personality, or psychological disorders such as bipolar disorder, epilepsy, delusions, and hallucinations. You must also provide details of any history of substance abuse.

Depending on your certification level, you may also require the following tests:

  • Chest X-ray
  • Blood cholesterol level
