Think you might be dealing with ED? Get all of your questions answered.

Okay, so maybe you feel a bit embarrassed to talk about erectile dysfunction but know that this problem is incredibly common. In fact, around one-third of men experience erectile dysfunction at some point during their lifetime. Of course, our Punta Gorda, FL, physicians Dr. Joseph Ravid and Dr. David Persaud get quite a few questions about erectile dysfunction (ED). If you aren’t too sure whether you are ready to discuss this issue with your doctor, here are some answers to men’s top questions regarding ED.

What causes erectile dysfunction?

There are a number of factors that could lead to ED. The most common factor is age. Men are more at risk for ED after 50 years old; however, this doesn’t mean that men in their 30s and 40s can’t also develop erectile dysfunction. Other factors include,

  • Certain medications (e.g. beta blockers)
  • Obesity
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Urological conditions
  • High cholesterol

Will ED go away on its own?

It is possible for erectile dysfunction to go away on its own without treatment. This is often the case if life stressors such as losing a job are to blame; however, sometimes you may require additional treatment and care to address the underlying cause of your ED.

When should I see a doctor about my erectile dysfunction symptoms?

If you believe that a certain stressful situation or life event could be the culprit behind your ED then you may want to wait it out to see if your ED also goes away; however, if you are experiencing anxiety or depression around your symptoms, or if your symptoms persist, then it may be time to talk with our Punta Gorda, FL, doctor about your erectile dysfunction.

What are my treatment options?

If you’ve been diagnosed with ED, there are a variety of strategies and treatment options that our medical team can offer. Along with certain lifestyle changes (e.g. losing excess weight if you are obese; taking medication to control high blood pressure) there are other ways to treat ED including,

  • Medication (e.g. Viagra)
  • Penile injections

The treatment plan that works best for you will depend on the severity of your symptoms, as well as the root cause. This is something that you and your doctor can discuss during your next appointment.

If you are dealing with erectile dysfunction and it’s affecting your quality of life, call the Punta Gorda, FL, medical team at Gulfview Medical Institute at (941) 505-2100 to schedule a consultation.

How hormone replacement therapy from your doctors in Punta Gorda, Florida can help you feel better

Your hormones play an important role in how you feel. They help control your mood and many other functions. They also play an important role in how you look, by keeping your skin young-looking. So, what happens when you have an imbalance in your hormone levels? You can feel out of balance too.

The doctors at Gulfview Medical Institute in Punta Gorda, Florida can help. They offer a wide variety of medical services, including hormone therapy to help you feel like yourself again.

You can experience a hormonal imbalance due to natural body processes like puberty, pregnancy, or menopause. A hormonal imbalance can also be caused by a medical condition or procedure like a hysterectomy.

Whatever has caused your hormonal imbalance, your body and your mind can suffer. You may begin to experience:

  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Gaining extra weight
  • Increasing fat around your belly
  • Losing interest in sex
  • Lower energy levels
  • Feeling anxious or depressed
  • Problems with memory

The doctors at Gulfview Medical Institute will check your current hormone levels and determine the appropriate hormone therapy to help you feel better. They may also suggest lifestyle modifications like increasing your level of exercise, dietary changes, and stress management techniques.

Hormone therapy is the cornerstone of treatment for hormone issues. Bio-identical hormones are at the forefront of hormone replacement because they offer so many benefits and have a low risk of side effects.

Consider that bio-identical hormones are:

  • Identical in structure to human hormones
  • Long-lasting, from three to five months
  • Extensively researched and tested
  • Able to maintain a steady stream of hormones in your blood
  • Individually dosed, causing fewer side effects

Bio-identical hormones also increase bone density, helping to prevent osteoporosis, broken bones, and fractures. Bio-identical hormone treatment also won’t increase your risk of having a heart attack, having a stroke, or forming blood clots.

You owe it to yourself to discover the benefits of hormone therapy. To find out more about how hormone therapy can help you, call the doctors of Gulfview Medical Institute in Punta Gorda, Florida at (941) 505-2100. Call now!

How your doctor in Punta Gorda, FL, can help with a flight physical

If you are a pilot, chances are that you are familiar with a flight physical. However, if you are a soon-to-be-pilot, you may want to know more. Dr. Joseph Ravid is a Senior Aviation Medical Examiner at Gulfview Medical Institute in Punta Gorda, FL, and there he offers flight physicals to help you stay healthy.

The Federal Aviation Administration, or FAA, requires Class I and Class II medical fitness certifications to become a professional, commercial pilot. A Class II certification is required for pilots who fly as a hobby. A Class I certification is required to be a commercial pilot. During a Class I flight physical, your doctor will:

  • Check your eyesight and hearing
  • Perform a comprehensive physical examination including your lungs, heart, blood pressure, stomach, extremities, and nervous system
  • Perform an electrocardiogram (EKG) to determine any abnormalities in heart rhythm or other heart functions
  • Check your lung function to establish your ability to breathe deeply and expel the air from your lungs
  • Order laboratory tests of blood cholesterol and hemoglobin
  • Order a chest X-ray

Your doctor may also counsel you on lifestyle habits, including avoiding drinking and smoking for at least three months before your medical certification.

When you come in for your flight physical, please bring any relevant medical records with you, and your confirmation number to the appointment. The FAA requires you and your doctor to complete Form 8500-8. To view and print a copy of this form, please click on this link: https://medxpress.faa.gov/MedXpress/

Class I flight physicals are required every year for commercial pilots. If you are over 40 or are an airline transport pilot, you need to renew your medical certification twice each year.
